The Gwydir Wetlands is a floodplain ecosystem of international importance, areas of which are listed under the Ramsar Convention. The wetlands support threatened and vulnerable plant and animal species and ecological communities. They also provide critical habitat for waterbird breeding, feeding, and resting sites for migratory birds.
Located west of Moree, NSW, the wetlands receive water from the Gwydir (Guwayda) River which flows through the traditional lands of the Gomeroi (also known as Gamilaroi, Kamilaroi or Gamilaraay) People. The wetlands are a remnant (15%) of what was once an extensive network around 200,000 hectares of water courses, floodplains and marshlands. The video above is a glimpse into the beautiful and vibrant world of wetlands in the National Parks and Wildlife Service Gwydir Wetlands State Conservation Area. Produced by the Gwydir River System Area-scale Project, led by the Aquatic Ecology team at the University of New England and photographer and film maker Verso. Enjoy!
