Presentation Description

Citizen science projects involve public participation in and engagement with science. This Flow-MER Friday webinar features case studies from Dr Munique Reid, Gwydir River System and Darling and Warrego River Systems Area-scale projects & Prof. Robyn Watts, Mid-Murray River System Area-scale Project.

Dr Reid discusses the role of science communication in Flow-MER and explores the many forms it can take. Drawing on examples from the Gwydir River System and Darling and Warrego River Systems Area-scale Projects such as local community engagement (local markets, school science days, community festivals, expert presentations), field days and the creation of various communications products.

Prof. Watts talks to the Mid-Murray Citizen Science project, a place-based activity in which citizen scientists (Indigenous River Rangers, local residents, and farmers) record water depth at static gauges in locations where there are no automated gauges. In addition to contributing data for the evaluation of environmental flows, this collaborative project works to increase citizens’ knowledge of hydrology and environmental flows.
